Facebook made an announcement on Tuesday that everyone saw coming by launching its Shops feature, a service that will allow businesses to display and sell products on its platforms. Positioned to take over the online shopping market for small business, Facebook opportune foray into the online shopping market comes as no surprise.

How will bricks and mortar retailers combat the online shopping boom in Australia?
There’s no denying that online shopping is growing at a rapid pace in Australia – just to give you an idea of the scale, in the 12 months to September 2016 Australians spent an estimated $20.8 billion on retail purchases online. If you’re thinking that’s a lot of shoes you’d be correct. But the good news is that $20.8 billion spent online is the equivalent to around 7% of the traditional bricks and mortar retail sector - so whilst online shopping is growing at a fast pace, it is by no means panic stations for traditional retail stores just yet.

Retailers are struggling, so do we buy online?
Figures released last showed the worst retail growth in fifty years as consumers deserted shops again in the end of financial year sales.
The 1.6 per cent annual rise in spending is the worst result since 1961-62 - an era when there were no credit cards and shoppers used pounds, shillings and pence.
The Bureau of Statistics revealed sales for the normally strong month of June had fallen by 0.1 per cent, following an 0.6 per cent drop in May.
