My Internship at Marketing Eye
Reflecting back on my time as an intern at Marketing Eye, I am incredibly grateful for the knowledge and skills I have obtained from this journey.
Before Marketing Eye, I had worked under one other marketing internship position. Although the titles were very similar, the work was vastly different. My role at Marketing Eye pushed me to work individually and hold greater accountability for my work. My greatest challenge initially (as my supervising marketing executives can attest to) was finishing my tasks within the recommended timeframe. Previously, I had worked in a team to complete a blog post and we were given several days. However, Marketing Eye pushed my ability to complete blog posts by myself, within at least a day. Initially, I could not comprehend finishing a blog post within a couple of hours as I would agonise and perfect each sentence as I went; making sure that each line was perfect.
I eventually learned that this is an ineffective way to approach my tasks.
One of the biggest takeaways from this internship has been through conducting market research on current marketing trends. I had always had a small idea of the scale and proliferation of digital marketing, but actually researching more detailed aspects of the field has deepened my knowledge on the topic tenfold. This is the type of knowledge which university often fails to teach due to the curriculum simply not being able to keep up with the ever-evolving marketing landscape. Marketing terminology such as website traffic, click-through rate and return on investment (ROI) have changed from less tangible concepts into words that are relevant, tangible concepts.
Not only has this internship clarified my interests in the areas of marketing, but it has also provided me with a greater comprehension of my university studies. My marketing unit this semester focused on marketing strategy implementation, and I have been able to witness first-hand the teachings of this unit. From artificial intelligence to customer experience, this experience has enabled me to draw parallels between both the theoretical and practical aspects of marketing.
Working in an agency has also been an eye-opening experience in terms of work culture. Although most of my internship was done from home, I enjoyed the close-knit working structure when I was able to go into the office.
For anyone on the fence about undertaking an internship, I would highly recommend taking the leap of faith and going for it. Internships bridge the gap between university knowledge and real-life application. The knowledge you gain will be invaluable to not only your future marketing positions but the broader workforce in general. I will end off with this quote "the fears you don't face become our limits". For any budding marketing students, don't allow the fear of a new challenge like an internship to prevent you from achieving your goals!
